The Surprise of the Event book
This title ought also to be written or read as ‘The Surprise: Of the Event,’ for the ‘surprise’ is not only an attribute, quality, or property of the event, but the event itself, its being or its essence. What eventuates in the event is not only that which happens, but that which surprises – perhaps even that which surprises itself (turning it, in short, away from its own ‘happening’ [arrivée],1 not allowing itself to be event, surprising being in it, not letting it be, unless by surprise).
