When looking at the caring professions,1 nurses are by far the largest occupa tional group. Numbering half a million in Britain, they account for two-thirds of the National Health Service (NHS) workforce, and one-third of the health service budget is spent solely on nurses’ pay (Labour Research 1997). The sheer size o f their numbers and the nature of their ‘care work’ - within the context of the dramatic recent reforms to the NHS — make nurses an interesting occupa tional group to study.
