ABSTRACT
As this book has evolved it has become clear that we are confronting certain principles
of theatre(s). Principles that are neither ‘timeless’ nor metaphysical ‘essences’, but which
run as essential tropes or through-lines across the forms and histories of theatre, and
which are then manifested in specific ways (culturally, socially, politically, artistically).
