This is a modified version of a paper read at the 27th Congress of the International Psychoanalytical Association in Vienna in 1971. It was published in the International Journal of Psycho-Analysis (1972) 53: 191. It has appeared in the Rivista di Psicoanalisi (1972) XVIII, under the title ‘Aggressività e principio del piacere.
