ABSTRACT
This paper was given at a meeting on Freud and Psychoanalysis in Rome in 1972 under the auspices of the Istituto della Enciclopedia Italiana, and was published in the Enciclopedia Italiana, Rome, in 1973. It was also given at a scientific meeting of the Centro Psicoanalitico di Roma in May 1972 and was published in the Rivista di Psicoanalisi (1972) XVIII under the title ‘Oltre L’istinto di morte’.
