ABSTRACT

This chapter will discuss a framework for working with young children of 10 years and under who are sexually aggressive. It describes the use of a ‘Stop and Think’ model, an inter-personal problem-solving approach based on cognitive-behavioural theories, which can be used with individual children or with groups. Strategies for simplifying complex, abstract concepts into concrete forms that can be understood and used by young children will be described and illustrated with brief case examples. Issues of particular relevance to this population will be discussed such as the importance of working with the non-abusing carer; safety and protection issues; developmental aspects of the work; the dilemmas of working with children who are both victimisers of other children and victims themselves, and the importance of working within statutory and professional networks.
