ABSTRACT

Today Asian migrants form the numerically most important non-European immigrant group in Germany. Furthermore, Asian migration shows a continuous increase in numbers since the early 1990s. Nowadays large communities and individuals, out of them an estimated 40,000 persons of Vietnamese origin, live in Germany without regular legal status and add to the officially registered Asian population. Added to this, there are substantial regional differences – while Asian migrants constitute the most important immigrant group in some eastern Länder of Germany, there are few in the western Länder.
