ABSTRACT
Systematic quarantining of ships arriving from Levantine Turkey was adopted by Venice in the aftermath of the Black Death when it became apparent that the Levant had become a permanent reservoir of plague. The Venetian ships collected valuable cargoes of silk and spices that had been transported overland to the Levant, and they were isolated in quarantine for 40 days on returning to Venice to establish that they were not infected.
