ABSTRACT

Surviving and thriving in the twenty-first century require a sort of ‘personal effectiveness’ in coping well with unknown territory and in recognising and making choices. This has been called creativity in everyday life, or life-wide creativity (Craft, 2002); life-wide resourcefulness in charting a course of action by seeing opportunities as well as overcoming obstacles. This may occur in personal and social matters or in undertaking an activity in a disciplinary or professional area. It is ‘know-how’ (Ryle, 1949), concerned with the skills involved in manoeuvring and operating with concepts, ideas and the physical and social world – including the skills of social interaction and engagement.
