ABSTRACT
I am an economic theorist and not an economic historian. So I fear that I shall not be able to say anything seriously informed concerning the Corn Laws or their repeal. Instead I propose to reconsider the question of whether on balance economic theory can make a convincing case for free trade. This may be of interest when thinking about the events of 150 years ago, but is also currently relevant given the present tide in its favour.
