ABSTRACT

There are a variety of problem definition mechanisms. They can be considered as either redefinition approaches or analytical approaches. First we look at redefinition approaches. The techniques we consider here include laddering, goal orientation, boundary examination, progressive abstractions and the ‘why’ method. Under the heading of analytical methods we look at decomposable matrices and cause and effect diagrams.
