ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the values that influence the work of informal educators. It focuses particularly on professional values, that is the values that are said to underpin or define the work. Other values are also influential, for example the personal values of the people who work as informal educators, and the values of employing organisations. Often these overlap, or are complementary, but sometimes they are different and potentially contradictory. This chapter first discusses the nature of professional values, before examining the values that underpin informal education work and the potential for conflict between personal, professional and agency values.
