ABSTRACT

The 1988 Education Reform Act which legislated for a national framework for teaching and learning has, in recent years, determined discussion about the curriculum. The Act established the National Curriculum with its core and foundation subjects, identified the requirement for schemes of work and for assessment and reporting procedures. Religious Education retained the statutory position within the curriculum which it had held since 1944, and, together with the National Curriculum, it became the ‘basic curriculum’ for all schools.
