ABSTRACT

Assessment is an integral part of the cycle of planning effective teaching and learning in any subject. There is a saying: ‘A lesson is not taught until it is learned’. Managing the learning as well as preparing the teaching is part of the role of the teacher; indeed, they are two sides of the same coin. Into this process of teaching and learning must come feedback to the pupil If we take the endeavour of pupils seriously they have a right to know how well they are doing. This requires not only the identification of teaching and learning objectives in the first place, but some assessment against them to establish the progress a pupil has made. Teachers need to know this too, not only to be able to report to others how well a pupil has achieved, but so that they can plan the next stage of the pupil’s learning. All this is as true of RE as any subject.
