ABSTRACT
It may sound straightforward to say that the aim of studying is to learn. If learning consisted of one type of activity that was easy to define then a short prescription for effective study might be relatively easy to produce. However, if you pause for only a moment to consider the kinds of learning that you draw on during the course of a day then it is likely that you will think of quite a variety. Box 1.1 lists a few. Some examples of the kinds of learning used in the course of a day
knowing how to perform various skills or carry out various procedures
being able to solve problems
knowing when to apply a theory or knowledge that you already have
knowing which strategies to use or how to manage information
having recall of items such as names, numbers, and a variety of other facts
thinking critically
being analytical
communicating effectively
being able to make informed decisions.
