ABSTRACT

Based on the initial concerns of the working group, Peter Haggerty of the Scholarly Communications Project at Virginia Tech developed a series of Perl scripts that used the Common Gateway Interface (CGI) to allow authors, reviewers, and librarians to create and manage an ETD using any computer with an internet connection and a web browser. Initially, submission of an ETD was entirely voluntary. A few students chose to submit an ETD using the new process, and from their experiences much was learned about creating and managing complex content.
