ABSTRACT

In the aftermath of the cold war a considerable number of countries have turned towards democratic political institutions. The so-called ‘third wave’ of democratization has encompassed all those countries belonging to the former Warsaw Pact, as well as countries like South Africa, Cambodia, Chile, El Salvador, Nicaragua and so on. With due regard to the fact that an increasing number of countries in the world have democratic institutions, it has been argued that democracy is becoming a universally recognized goal for the countries of the world.
