ABSTRACT
Rights are not transcendental universal norms for behaviour handed down from on high but human discoveries about our human condition made in the course of human conflict. While this is a condition we all share as members of the human species and indeed as animals, the discovery takes place in specific places and times and is embedded within different cultures and ways of thinking.
