ABSTRACT
Personal voice criticism raises the issue of genre and the mode of critical discourse in a more pointed fashion than more traditional criticisms. As will become evident simply by reading the thirteen essays in this volume, the sheer variety of genres and also, in one or two cases, the impossibility of attributing an essay to any known genre calls for a new way of thinking about genre within criticism. It also shows that a new mode of criticism brings forth new genres that may be as individual and as creative as the respective critics. Besides prose, poetry, for example, may become a language of the critics.
