ABSTRACT
Historical context ‘Environmental auditing’ is a relatively new term but one which is coming into wider use. However, it means very different things to different people. Much of what
is now being done under the heading of ‘environmental auditing’ has been done for a long time under different names (environmental review, screening, investigation, quality control, survey assessment) (UNEP, 1988).
