ABSTRACT
Following the fall of communism in Hungary, the foundation sector quickly emerged. With relatively significant assets and high numbers of employees, it was seen to have the potential to work with all segments of society and the institutional system. Today, nearly 20,000 foundations are registered in Hungary. This number is surprisingly high given the limited time-span of 14 years during which these foundations have been established. However, in order to present a more accurate perspective of the foundation sector in Hungary, it is necessary to question and analyse the various, sometimes unexpected, motivations behind the establishment and operation of these organisations.
