ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at how to prepare yourself for studying a language as an adult learner. Learning a language means more than acquiring vocabulary, mastering grammar and doing exercises. It involves being well prepared and well organized from the start. This means thinking carefully about your needs, working out which level is appropriate for you and using this knowledge to help you choose a course that matches your requirements. It also involves organization (1) of your resources so that you can access them easily and (2) of your study area so that you have the optimum conditions for learning. Getting organized also means keeping effective records and thinking about what works well for you.
