ABSTRACT

The Maltese Islands, consisting of Malta, Gozo and Comino, are collectively known as Malta. They are situated in the middle of the Mediterranean sea between Sicily and Northern Africa. The Islands cover an area of merely 316 square kilometres. The Maltese population, in 1993, amounted to 369,451, with a population density of 1,169 to the square kilometre (Malta, COS 1994).
