ABSTRACT

Privatization in Britain today is a dirty word. A great many people in all strata of society now see it as an outlet for the grossest forms of greed, as an example of the insensitivity which comes from arrogance and as the enrichment of the already rich at the expense of their much less well-off employees and customers. Moreover, everyone – except apparently the government – sees the recent rail privatization as a fiasco, already resulting in practices which are patently to the disadvantage of rail passengers, and which – if not radically changed – seem likely to result in a much worse railway system than existed until recently.
