ABSTRACT
This volume focuses on the significance of the meaning of alcohol to societies and its relationships to individual and collective identity transformations and gender in Euro-Mediterranean societies.1 However, all contributors have found it difficult to exclude consideration of many other important aspects of alcohol use in society, such as commensality, transcendence, and religious ideology which are also related to this central theme.
