ABSTRACT

Christian doctrines are often said to support the separation of the body from the soul. Though this has been shown to be a misconception,1 it none the less remains a commonly held view. In this chapter I hope to show how, amongst a group of Greek Orthodox nuns, the body is both a symbol of the material, mundane world, contrasting thereby with the spirit, as well as being an aspect of the divine, partaking in the salvation of the soul.
