ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the ‘housing experience’ of lone migrant workers living in hostel accommodation, using case-study material based on fieldwork in Lyon. It describes the built form and social milieu of hostel environments, and considers factors that influence both provision and use. More specifically, it identifies conflicts of interest between suppliers and users-conflicts which have led to widespread under-occupation as well as prolonged rent strikes in some hostels and which have resulted in three government enquiries and subsequent reports (Ginesy-Galano 1984, pp. 256-79).
