ABSTRACT
It has, perhaps, been inevitable that the massive out-pouring of literature in recent years on the subject of immigrants in France has predominantly been written from the perspective of the French themselves. This should not be allowed to obscure the fact that, especially in recent years, there have been an increasing number of contributions taking the viewpoint of the immigrants themselves, a significant number of these being in the form of novels and autobiographies uncovering the world and the experiences of immigrant groups, written by individuals with intimate knowledge of the phenomena they write about, using vernacular media and in so doing reaching a wide cross-section of the general public.
