ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the question of the introduction of milk products, in particular the sweetened condensed milk in a traditional non-dairying area, Indonesia. Export to and use of milk in tropical regions is often criticised from various sides in Europe. Common arguments against export to and the use of milk in tropical regions are, for example, that milk is not a part of the local food habits and cannot easily be digested because of lactose intolerance; that milk products are a threat to breast-feeding; and that milk is a relatively expensive protein-rich food and therefore it is more sensible to use cheaper local foods.
