ABSTRACT
The novel Kitchen by Yoshimoto Banana (1990) attracted young female readers through its focus on the kitchen as a symbol of nurturance, nostalgia, and subversion. The fractionating and alienating experiences of family, society and the workplace were epitomised in the life of its young protagonist, and the heroine uses food to align herself in unconventional places and attachments, counter to the norms of her society.
