ABSTRACT

This paper describes the current status and evolution of the German radio and television broadcasting system. Germany has a rather competitive broadcasting market and is currently in a transition phase from analogue to digital transmission technology. This is stimulated and accelerated by deregulation and by the tremendous advances in microelectronics, computer and networking technologies. It leads to interesting and dramatic convergence effects between traditionally diverse areas like telecommunications, computing and media. The paper describes, starting from the historical roots of German broadcasting, the recent developments around the introduction of digital radio based on DAB, digital TV based on DVB and converged services and applications mostly based on Internet technologies.
