ThecoinageoftheArabianpeninsulaingeneral,andoftheGulfcoast inparticular,isstillincompletelyknown.Untiladecadeorsoago, onemighthavethoughtthatlittlecoinagewasissuedalongthe ArabiancoastoftheGulfintheIslamicperiod,butthisimpression wasmisleading,becausefewscholarsandcollectorshadlookedfor coinsintheregion.RecentarticlesbyNicholasLowickandArlette Negre 1havemateriallyincreasedourknowledgeofthearea's monetaryhistory,butdiscoveriesstillremaintobemade,as evidencedbyanewly-discoveredseriesofsmallcoppercoinsplated withsilver,whichintroducetoIslamicnumismaticsanewdynasty, theBaniiMismar,whodominatedal-Qatifinthelasthalfofthe 3rd/9thcentury.Theeighteencoinsdescribedhere,whicharethe onlyspecimenssofarrecorded,comefromthecollectionofan American,MrRobertMorris,2andwerefoundbyhimorbyfriends onthegroundinandaroundthetownofJubayl.Jubayltodayisin SaudiArabia,butthiscoastlandwasconsideredpartofal-Bahrainin theerawhenthesecoinswereissued.
