ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION So far, the discussion has considered historical development and rates of forest clearance (Chapters 2 and 3), and has assessed detailed relationships between land-use change and soil (Chapter 4). We now turn to specific colonisation settlements where the problems of forest disturbance are seen in the light of individual and household agricultural strategies, particularly those of the smallholder.
