ABSTRACT

Appraisal is a professional system of two-way communication between a head of school or a head of department and an individual member of staff. It is a positive means of helping a manager of staff to develop the potential of his or her teaching and non-teaching colleagues. In order to maintain a positive approach the manager concentrates on performance aspects and seeks to help the appraisee assess:

• How well he or she is performing. • Whether he or she can improve in any area of their work. • The actions to improve the appraisee’s performance.
