Jinjiang has poor soil. Historically many people from Jinjiang emigrated, and so there are many overseas Chinese originating from Jinjiang. The city claims to have three million people inside and outside China, with 2.14 million residing overseas, including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. The bulk of overseas Chinese originating from Jinjiang are in Southeast Asia, mainly in the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore (Huaren Jingji Nianjian Editorial Committee, 1995:165).
