ABSTRACT

The word No, used to designate a certain kind of theatrical performance, is obscure in its origin, and Japanese scholars and Buddhist priests have various theories. The dancers employ fans baskets of flowers, flags and other accessories according to the story the dancers endeavor to interpret. The object of the Association is to collect works by and about Shakespeare, and material relation thereto, and to encourage and promote the study of Shakespeare in Japan. The Odori is a posture dance, with slow movements of the body, feet, arms and hands. The dancers employ fans, sprays of blossoms, baskets of flowers, flags and other accessories according to the story the dancers endeavor to interpret. Dr. Yuzo Tsubouchi finished his translation into Japanese of the complete works of Shakespeare, in 40 volumes—a monumental task in the face of unusual linguistic barriers. The Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum was so named in honor of the Doctor, and to commemorate his great achievement.
