ABSTRACT
The plains at the foot of the three mountain-groups, being as fertile as could be desired, were admirably suited to the cultivation of cereals and pulse, fruit-trees, and textile plants. At a time when the forests were vaster and the rainfall, therefore, more copious there was no lack of pasture-land. Heath, copse, and mountain swarmed with game. Bays on all sides teemed with fish.
