ABSTRACT
THE religious ceremonies and ritual practices of the preHellenes made a deep and lasting impression upon
the minds of the Greeks. After the lapse of centuries " the Cretans said that homage paid to the gods, sacrifices, and initiation into mysteries were Cretan inventions which other peoples had borrowed ".1 These exaggerated claims contain a good deal of truth.
