ABSTRACT

The rapidity with which innovations are now accepted in Japan was shown by the adoption of the white apron for children. This addition to the costume was first made by my mother for a little Japanese child. Acting as a bib it saved the kimono in the same way as the old-fashioned pinafore. As each small kimono when washed had to be taken apart, dried on a board and sewed together again, the little white apron became a source of pleasure to the mother. Other mothers saw the advantage and it was not long before every child in Japan wore an apron.
