FILIAL PIETY 47 relation can exist between parents and children, and the individual is therefore unable to achieve a truly satisfactory type of life. Under such conditions humanity is bound to lose those pre-eminent qualities which make men the lords of creation. Under such conditions society is bound to disintegrate. A nation in which such conditions exist is headed for destruction. The happy consummation of the individual life, the beneficial increase of population, the prosperity of society, and a truly flourishing national life all depend upon this primary virtue of filial piety. We cannot afford to neglect it for a single day.
