Knowing his rough position, he would work backwards, assuming an astronomical time, and by mathematical calculation he could find a fictitious altitude that would produce an astronomically fixed position to suit all assumptions. Applying this to the Ophir problem, I was qualifying myself to find Ophir so soon as I could find a reliable point of departure, or, conversely, I was becoming qualified to fix a point of departure and a good deal of intervening information, if the Fates put me at Ophir and then left me to prove that I had got there.
