ABSTRACT

Territorial and ethnic differences in demographic processes, fertility in particular, are important characteristics of the demographic pattern in the USSR. Urlanis (1963) was one of the first to notice the interrelation between territorial differences and nationalities in fertility levels. Since then fertility studies based on surveys conducted in 1960, 1967-1968, 1972, 1975, 1981, and 1985 show that territorial differences in fertility level in the USSR are highly significant and are the result of fertility differences among nationalities (ethnic groups).
