ABSTRACT

Martin Delany was born in Charleston, Virginia, of African parents; his father was a Golah and his mother was a Mandingo. Delany’s earliest instruction came from a Yankee pedlar. In 1822 his mother moved the family to Pennsylvania, where in the 1830’s he began the study of medicine under Dr. Andrew M. McDowell. In 1850 he entered Harvard Medical School for one year.
