ABSTRACT

Charles Diggs was born in Detroit and studied at the University of Michigan and Fisk University. He also studied to be an undertaker at Wayne University. He served as Second Lieutenant in the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) from 1943 to 1945. He is president and treasurer of the Detroit Metropolitan Mutual Insurance Company and vice president of Diggs Enterprise. From 1951 to 1954 Diggs was the first Negro member of the Michigan State Senate. He was elected to represent the Thirteenth Michigan District to the 84th, 85th, 86th and 87th United States Congresses. He still serves in the Congress and is the first Negro from the State of Michigan to be so honoured.
