The Growth of Modern Colonialism At the time when Britain, France and Germany 'scrambled' for Africa, Portugal extended her effective occupation of the interior of Angola and Mozambique. Military campaigns putting down sporadic uprisings were carried on well into the twentieth century. As late as 1917, there were disturbances in Angola's region of Moxico, and in the Mozambique's region of Barue.1
