ABSTRACT
Cowrie from North and South Well before Dahomey came into being, black and white met in West Africa on two fronts. The story of cowrie in Africa should then reveal some of the modalities of that meeting, first on the Middle Niger and, a century later, on the Guinea Coast. When, where, and how did cowrie shells penetrate West Africa? And by what agency was cowrie established as a currency system?
