With all this going on, at times it seemed that the only strategy the campaign could cling to was: 'I am glad you brought that up because it is just what we wanted to talk about.' I believe that when forced back upon this, we implemented the strategy with verve, enthusiasm and skill. In particular, John Major showed his presence and quality with some superb performances. Yet disunity and scandal is hardly a recipe for victory.
