ABSTRACT

In a primary school where an integrated approach to curriculum has been adopted, the subject of science does not exist alone. Subjects in the curriculum are not limited by boundaries; rather it is the interdependency of subjects which is utilized in the learning process. This integrated approach in this school is based on a number of rationale statements. These are, that children learn when:

• the environment is relevant and meaningful; • the children are actively involved; • they are able to negotiate their own goals and become responsible for

their own learning; • they are working in a cooperative framework; • they experience a safe learning environment which encourages risk-taking; • they see the teacher as a fellow learner or facilitator.
