ABSTRACT

It is worth pointing this out early in the chapter as inappropriate stereotypical images of Asian children as a homogenous group often prevail in British culture. Just as British society as a whole is pluralistic, Asian communities have differences as well as similarities in cultural activities, beliefs, language, social class, lifestyles, their country of origin, and many other factors, between them. It is important that the children who took part in this project are not viewed as members of a single Asian community, disregarding some of the distinct differences. Although there may exist unity and solidarity among culturally diverse and ethnically distinctive groups it is not possible to make any broad generalizations about them (Priestly, 1995). This chapter is simply concerned with uncovering two children’s understanding of their personal experiences as members of Asian families living within a British context. There is no motivation to present this material as representative of all Asian children’s experiences. As with interview material presented throughout the book, the data is intended to be illustrative and thought provoking.
