ABSTRACT

This chapter will attempt to discuss the everyday life of an aca­ demic, specifically those in hospitality education. There is great confusion over what constitutes work life for a faculty member. There has been growing concern over faculty work life since the latter part of the 1980s, specifically focused on faculty productivity and the amount of money being spent on higher education. There are three major emphases of a faculty member 's life; teaching or instruction, research or scholarly activities, and service. Depending on the faculty member, specific institution, specific academic pro­ gram, and immediate supervisors, the three unique functions of faculty can change in relative importance even in a given year.
